and this bird you'll never change....

Apparently this little chap was knocking around in our front garden this evening. C. tells me that he looked like he had just left the nest and was looking a bit wobbly and unsure of himself. By the time I got back he had disappeared, so I hope he managed to find his way home okay.
Anyone got any ideas what he is? *
I used to be in the YOC too....
*yes, thanks very much in advance, but I'm actually aware of the fact that he's a bird. I was hoping someone would be able to tell me what *kind* of bird.

*Delurks, to reveal sad ornithological bias* Looks like a mistle thrush to me. And yes, you are right, the Keane single, which I heard this morning, does sound extremely U2. *Relurks*

Hello Swissie, I was lurking too...
I reckon it's a young goldfinch. The front looks a bit thrush-like, but look at that yellow flash and the black and white bars on the wings - that's a bit exotic for a thrush. I know goldfinches don't have that fleckly look when they're grown up, and they have bright red faces, but yours is just a babe and hasn't got its bright colours yet.
If I'm right, it will have been a very little bird. Here's a hastily googled comparison for you. It doesn't show much of the wings, but you get the idea.
Thanks for your mention the other day, too Swiss, although I think Paulie's politics are rather different from mine...
Right, back into the undergrowth now.

Here's the grown up version. It'll be nice to have these in your garden.

hey Red! great to see you around the place. I always think of you when I see seagulls.
I wasn't saying Paulie's politics are like yours... just that I like reading someone talk about politics in an cogent, intelligent and empassioned way. There aren't enough of you about.
Good work on the bird front too.

Wow. He's a cutie. I'm afraid I know nothing about birds, but you've got plenty of help, it seems. I do like birds though...now there's a bit of double entendre...

I did a zoology degree and can confirm without a shadow of a doubt that it's "a small brown jobbie"
Technical term that.

If you'd panned out you might have just caught a glimpse of Rod Hull's arm. Make your own conclusions from that.
