when you cut your lover slack, you'll get a monster back

Over at The Art of Noise they’ve just started a new feature where each week a panel of contributors will write a short music-centred piece…. Could be about a band, an album, a song, a venue, a genre, an instrument – the only limitation is that the chosen subject must begin with the letter of the week.

This being the first week, we’re doing the letter ‘A’.

So if you want to read Alison on Adam and the Ants, Dr Migs on Alabama 3, Ben on Amplification, Phill on Anderson / Butler, Jez on ….anyone, Jonathan on ‘Apple Venus Vol 1’, Pete on Asian Dub Foundation & yours truly on The Auteurs, then you’d best head over there and check it out.

Apparently we’re moving onto the letter ‘B’ next week, and they’re still looking for contributors....

hmmm. What shall I do?

The Bluetones?
Blackpool Empress Ballroom?
Billy Bragg?
'Back in Black'?
'Blood Sugar Sex Magick'?
'Blue Monday'?
'Beyond the Sea'?
Bono?
The blues?
The bass guitar?

So many choices, so many choices...

Any suggestions?

Your topic header is a lyric from "Light Aircraft On Fire" by The Auteurs. That's probably not enough to claim my sad trivia fiver, so let me add this.

It's the only song I can think of where the single edit has the 'f' word in it (in that very line), and it's removed on the album version. Luke Haines is a supremely perverse human being.

'B', eh? I'll think on it. I reckon I could probably write something when it gets to 'C'...

PS. Verification word 'Xauria'? Sounds like a character from a very bad fantasy novel.

    He he he.

    Blur?
    Barbarism begins at home?
    Blow monkeys?

    I could go on.

And don't forget to watch David Ford tonight!

    Brass sections in popular music.

Bra (Madonna's pointy one, circa 1990).

    Boy Bands - Why?

    The Bump (1970s dance craze).

    "Big Bottom" by Spinal Tap.

Beer - its importance in the general live music experience.

Beards (ZZ Top, Grandaddy, Wayne Coyne, Robert Wyatt, System of a Down, Craig David, the geezer out of the Magic Numbers, etc etc etc).

Bristol: popular music capital of the West! (Discuss.) (But probably not for long.)

    Do the blues, Swiss.

Funny, I was having a musical think just now for other reasons, and then came here and found this. You must be sending out vibes or something.

Luke Haines could take his own share of the blame for not getting his dues - not being nice to the audience may be an integral part of his act, and it always makes me laugh - but not everyone goes for it. I agree though, an underrated genius. And he married a journalist? Well, he was beaten to the woman out of Black Box Recorder by... the other bloke in the band. I'm particular partial to "Child Psychology" - best chorus ever.

Post "After Murder Park"? That's one album basically isn't it? (compilations excepted)
