we're off to never never land...

At the risk of sounding like an über-geek and boring you all by talking about comic books again....have you read The Sandman by Neil Gaiman?

This stuff is AMAZING. No really... it's fantastic stuff. Erudite, witty, thoughtful, literate, intelligent, engrossing... Calling it a "comic" just doesn't seem to do justice to its achievement, and I can't get enough of it. I've devoured the first two volumes this weekend, I have one more to try to stretch out over the next week, and then I'm going straight into town to buy the other seven volumes. Seriously... this is gripping stuff.

I think the Da Vinci Code is just going to have to wait.

Oh well.

Am I the last person in the world to discover how good this is? You guys all know, right?

When you said you'd got it I thought you might get on well with that. To be honest, it put the willies up me (figuratively) when I read it many moons ago.

Nope - you're not the last...

But you can happily add them to the ST library book-loaning service - after 'V', of course.

I've not read The Sandman as my first foray into graphic novels (the series about the vigilante preacher, called, I think, "The Preacher") left me with screaming nightmares for weeks. Testimony to the genre's effectiveness but all the convincing I needed to walk away for a while.

Glad you're enjoying it, though. Have you read Art Spiegelman's Maus?

Definitely not the last. In fact, up until recently I wasn't even aware there was a category of books referred to as "graphic novels"

ooo yes - Maus is really powerful stuff. Swap you that, if you haven't read it yet?

Maus is good. The first graphic novel I read. Of course, now I have to run out and get this one. I loved American Gods by the same author (not a graphic novel), so I imagine this will be fascinating as well.

I thought "American Gods" was outstanding, but I have a huge softspot for "Good Omens" which Gaiman co-wrote with Terry Pratchett....

And yeah... I've read "Maus". Powerful stuff.
