I ain't no senator's son...

Earworms of the Week

> "Jilted John" - Jilted John

This popped up when I was listening to my iPod on shuffle during an interminable journey to Feltham and back on Thursday (departure from Nottingham: 05:30. Arrival in Feltham: 09:15. Departure from Feltham: 15:15. Arrival in Nottingham: 18:30. 7 hours in the car. Productive time in meetings: about ten minutes. A good use of my time, no?). It's a very childish song, of course, but all the more appealing for that.

"Oh she's a slag and he's a creep
She's a tart, he's very cheap
She is a slut, he thinks he's tough
She is a bitch, he is a puff
Yeah yeah, it's not fair
Yeah yeah, it's not fair"

Gordon, of course, is famously a moron.

Brilliant.

> "Charlotte the Harlot" - Iron Maiden

I was listening to the first album the other day, and it's bloody brilliant. They're more famous for the foghorn voice of Bruce Dickinson these days, and it's easy to forget quite how punky the earliest incarnation of Iron Maiden, with Paul Dianno on vocals, sounded.

> "The Intro and the Outro" - The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Viv Stanshall is much heralded as a genius in some parts of course. I just like this song.

Starts out conventionally enough...

"Hi there, nice to be with you, glad you could stick around.
Like to introduce `Legs' Larry Smith, drums
And Sam Spoons, rhythm pole
And Vernon Dudley Bohay-Nowell, bass guitar
And Neil Innes, piano."

but soon we're off and away with the fairies:

"And looking very relaxed, Adolf Hitler on vibes.
Nice! "

and then:

"And specially flown in for us, the session's gorilla on vox humana.
Nice to see Incredible Shrinking Man on euphonium.
Drop out with Peter Scott on duck call.
Hearing from you later, Casanova on horn.
Yeah! Digging General de Gaulle on accordion.
Rather wild, General!"

Very silly, of course, but what else would you open a shuffleathon CD with? (oh, actually, that's supposed to be a secret, so best keep that to yourselves, eh?)

> "Powder Blue" - Elbow

Ah, the joys of the alphabeticon. E is for Elbow and all that.

> "You Got The Style" - Athlete

My favourite song from their first album, and so an obvious candidate for an earworm after the gig, even though it probably wasn't the best song that they played on the night ("Half Light", I reckon... although "Wires" and "Hurricane" were other obvious highlights).

> "The Bad Touch" - Bloodhound Gang

Stupid and sexist. Probably the kind of song that Adam Sandler has as his ringtone. So why's it on my iPod?

*shrugs*

I quite like it, and that lyric is irresistable

"You and me baby ain't nothing but mammals
Let's do it like they do it on the Discovery Channel"

If that's a chat up line that's ever worked, I'll eat my hat.

Am I alone in being awfully intrigued by the lyric

"Love the kind you clean up with a mop and bucket"

Just me? Righty ho.

> "Baby One More Time" - Travis

Comedy Britney cover. In spite of the fact that the band snigger their way through it, it's probably still the best thing they've ever done. Britney has only gone from strength to strength since here, no?

> "Lucky" - Easy Star All Stars

From the "Radiodread" concept album (a complete reggae run through of "OK Computer").

A near miss from the shuffleathon CD. I just couldn't make it work with anything else. The original is easily one of my favourite Radiohead songs, and the cover is a delight all of its own.

Was I wrong to pay £0 for Radiohead's new album? You might think so, but you probably didn't see the band at the Nottingham Arena when they were touring "Hail to the Thief". I have never seen a band look so disinterested or care so little about their audience. I love them to bits and have seen them live many times, but THEY OWE ME.

> "Fortunate Son" - Creedence Clearwater Revival

The might Fogerty holds court with this furious burst of invective against war and privilege. This hasn't made the cut on my shuffleathon, but it was a close run thing, let me tell you.

I should give fair warning to my unknowing recipient that - as of thursday night - my computer (and attendant CD-burner) decided to be knackered.

My CD, therefore, will be in abeyance until fixing takes place. Hopefully this should be fairly soon.

I currently type from a laptop, an activity that I never fail to find a tedious pain in the arse.

...now I feel the need to listen to the Bloodhound Gang. Such classics as "The Bad Touch," "You're Pretty When I'm Drunk," and "She Ain't Got No Legs."

Such a fine, completely politically incorrect bunch of kids.
